IP Protection Rating Standard: A Technical Guide for Rugged Devices

Introduction to IP Protection Ratings

In the world of industrial computing and electronics, reliability is paramount. The IP Protection is an international standard used to classify the varying degrees of protection provided by electrical enclosures against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water.

As a leading China-based rugged computer manufacturer, EmdoorPC adheres strictly to these standards to ensure our devices perform in the harshest environments. An IP rating consists of the letters “IP” followed by two digits:

  • The First Digit: Indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts (e.g., electrical conductors, moving parts) and of solid foreign objects (dust).
  • The Second Digit: Indicates of the equipment inside the enclosure against harmful ingress of water.

Understanding these testing methods is crucial when selecting a supplier or OEM/ODM solution for your industrial needs.

Detailed Breakdown of IP Testing Standards

Below is a technical breakdown of the specific testing criteria for the most common ratings found in industrial hardware: IP65 and IP67.

The First Digit: Solid Particle Protection (Level 6)

When you see a device rated as IP6x, the “6” represents the highest level of dust protection.

  • Definition: Dust-tight. No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact.
  • Test Method – Prevention of Access: A test wire of 1.0 mm diameter is used. It must not penetrate the enclosure and must maintain sufficient clearance from live parts.
  • Test Method – Solid Foreign Objects: The device is placed in a dust chamber incorporating a talcum powder circulation pump. The enclosure is tested under negative pressure (vacuum).
  • Pass Criteria: No dust shall enter the enclosure at the end of the test.

The Second Digit: Liquid Ingress Protection (Level 5)

The rating IPx5 indicates protection against low-pressure water jets. This is standard for devices used in outdoor manufacturing or logistics environments.

  • Definition: Water jets. Water projected by a nozzle against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
  • Test Method:
    • Equipment: Standard test nozzle with an internal diameter of 6.3 mm.
    • Distance: The nozzle is positioned 2.5m to 3m away from the device.
    • Water Flow Rate: 12.5 L/min ±5%.
    • Test Duration: 1 minute per square meter (1 min/㎡) of the enclosure surface area, with a minimum duration of 3 minutes.
Outdoor rugged devices assist emergency responders in disaster management, rescue operations, and public safety missions.

The Second Digit: Liquid Ingress Protection (Level 7)

The rating IPx7 represents a higher standard, allowing for temporary immersion in water. This is a critical requirement for many rugged tablets and industrial panel PCs used in marine or extreme field operations.

  • Definition: Immersion up to 1 meter. Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time.
  • Test Method:
    • Equipment: Immersion tank (diving tank).
    • Depth Conditions: The lowest point of enclosures with a height less than 850mm is located 1000 mm (1m) below the surface of the water. The highest point of the enclosure is located at least 150 mm (0.15m) below the surface of the water.
    • Test Duration: 30 minutes.

Choosing the Right Manufacturer for IP-Rated Devices
